Mejja, the collaboration hit maker of Utawezana song with Femi One comes from a very poor background.

Every genge fan in Kenya actually knows him ‘Mejja mtoto wa Khadija’ aka Okwonko.

“I came from ghetto manze mimi nimeuza groundnuts, nimeweka posters kwa club za jua kali, napewa food ama 50 bob.” He discloses his life in an interview with #Switch Tv.

Mejja who currently sits on the same table with celebrities in Kenya was a mere groundnuts seller who lived in Majengo slums in Nyeri. He never even dreamt of coming to Nairobi.

The music mogul is one of the few artists who go by their real name instead of stage names. I know this may be a shock to some of his loyal fans but thats the plain truth. His full name is Mejja Meme Hadija. Before he puffed up to be Onkokwo he used Khadija as his performance name.

He’s passionate about talent.
Speaking of theories, philosophies of the ‘ messed up school system’ in Kenya, Mejja is among the celebs in Kenya who have thrown shades to it.

He claims no one is dumb for failing in Chemistry or Mathematics. Rather parents and government should be majoring in nurturing talents and not force people with the messed up school system’.

‘If one can be a fashion model, take him/her to a fashion school,’ he says.

He does music fo fun.

From club bangers like Utawezana, double tap, Nyongwa, Pakua and kufa juu. Almost all seems to be revolving around sex and drugs, he says his aim is to make his fans happy and have fun.

‘I don’t make music to prompt any message’ he says in an interview with BBC.

2020 has been his best year since he began his music journey.
We all know what 2020 entails, from corona pandemic to reknown celebrity deaths not forgetting the devastating economy that has engulfed the world at large.

Due to Covid-19 safety measures, most of the entertainers shows went silent. Some have tried to beat the odd by live performances that are broadcasted online but this proved futile especially in third world countries.

However, for Mejja now known as ‘king of collabo’ he proved himself as an outstanding artist by releasing bangers that have topped Kenyan music charts.

After his collaboration with Femi one ‘ Utawezana’ Mejja has featured in other hit collabos’ like Pakua x Jovial, Kalale x Rekless, Watoto na Pombe x Otile brown and his latest release Wamocho ft the undisputed kings of sheng’ mbogi genje. His fans awaits for more surprises by the genge artist.
